Sustainable Technology Goals [Call to Action]
Inspired by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals
Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, we are uniting international developers from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to co-create guideposts for technological development: Sustainable Technology Goals.
As the world debates current technology developments, the Augmentation Lab has been brainstorming ways of involving the international community to develop a new-age philosophical framework for sustainable technology development. Not sustainable as just environmentally conscious, but an alternative vision of a future we will be proud of building.
We BELIEVE:
Interdisciplinary approaches are necessary.
International engagement is crucial.
Intergeneration education is essential.
& ultimately, Technology augments everything.
We are facing another revolution in technological advancements. As designers, engineers, artists, technologists, and consumers of these devices, it is our responsibility to direct our future with technology. At a time when narratives about the future are all too often dystopian, we need an alternative vision that we can build toward. Our mission is to define goals we collectively believe technologies should work toward — that we should work toward! With these, we hope to guide technology development and governance. As technology is moving incredibly fast, these STGs will be a living document that should be revised and improved over time.
Our sessions are online every other Saturday @ 3 pm EST. We invite all people from across disciplines and from around the world to join after originating from our local community at Harvard and MIT.
AI is already augmenting everything. Technological advancements alter society’s fundamental structure, as seen with the steam engine, electricity, and the internet. For the first time in history, tools and corporations are becoming more powerful than nations. What inspires change is not ideals but technologies. The people who know how to use these tools are setting the tone for our future.
As we face the next round of disruptive general-purpose technologies, we must acknowledge when technology no longer serves us, when technology becomes a means without an end. As our reliance on technology grows, so does the potential for technology to exploit us.
We cannot rely on outdated systems to dictate our lives with technology.
This global collaboration enables us to develop holistic and inclusive solutions that consider the unique needs and contexts of different regions and populations.
These goals will orient us in a world of noise. They will be open to constant revision as capabilities change by the day. Yet, we must commit to a vision of a future we will be proud of building. And we can only do this together.
Join us in our call to action to develop Sustainable Technology Goals. As the SDGs serve as a guidepost for social development initiatives around the world, we want the STGs to be a community-created guidepost for technological development everywhere.
